Pilates Classes For Rehabilitation In North London
Whilst Pilates has gained in popularity within the fitness arena, it was originally developed as a form of exercise for rehabilitation in the early 20th Century.
Today, Pilates is widely accepted by medical professionals as an effective way to manage injury recovery, prevention and a range of medical conditions, including low back pain and osteoporosis.
At BKH Pilates, we offer specialist advice and support with our Pilates for Rehabilitation sessions, including receiving referrals and partnering with physiotherapists to ensure you have the most appropriate treatment possible.
Pilates for Low Back Pain
More than 80% of the adult population suffer from low back pain at some time in their life and there is increasing evidence that physical activity and exercise can, in the majority of cases, help manage the condition.
Pilates is good way of exercising for many people with back pain as it provides a balanced workout focusing on strengthening the core abdominal muscles which provide support to the back. A study published in Clinical Rehabilitation (2015) concluded that the Pilates method was effective in reducing pain, improving function and quality of life in patients with chronic, non specific low back pain.
At BKH Pilates, we have undertaken specialist Back4Good Pilates training to help people with low back pain and our teaching is tailored to our client’s needs where exercises are modified and adapted accordingly. We are also registered with Backcare, the charity for healthier backs.
Pilates for surgery recovery
Developing strength in your back, core and hips give your body the alignment it needs while creating a natural sense of balance. Pilates allows you to explore and focus on specific weaknesses by retraining imbalanced muscles that may have contributed to your injury.
Pilates for Osteoporosis
Increasing bone density, strength and muscle mass allows your body to better support bones made brittle by osteoporosis. By using a set of exercises, designed to condition your entire body, you can strengthen your core muscles.

What our clients say
“Barbara taught me pilates for 6 months, I did the group classes at Covent Garden which were excellent. I joined as a beginner and Barbara made sure I fully understood what we were doing and the best way of doing it. The class size was never more than 6 or 7 people so it was always possible for Barbara to spot when technique needed improving. Overall, Barbara is a great teacher, highly experienced and makes sure everyone gets the most out of their class. I highly recommend these sessions.”
“Barbara’s 1-1 sessions have been fantastic for strength and feel-good building. She tailors sessions to your individual health problems (which in my case are many!) and builds in new challenges alongside gradual improvements to push the body further. I’ve signed up for my third block of 10 sessions and have found them a great addition to a programme of self-improvement.”
“Barbara is a kind and gentle teacher. She keeps her classes small and makes every one feel like an individual. She addresses our different concerns and adapts her class for each of us as necessary. Her classes are varied and interesting, following a different pattern each week. Barbara is extremely knowledgeable and really cares about her clients even compiling individual exercise plans for holidays. I could not recommend her more highly.”
“Very well informed and welcoming teacher. Friendly environment and in an excellent location. I came to this class as a complete beginner but it is definitely suitable for all levels.”
“I was thrilled to finally find a Pilates mat work class in Covent Garden – they’re hard to come by round here. Barbara is a great teacher. Her routines vary every week, she keeps an eye on all class-members carrying out the exercises correctly and the classes are fun too which is a bonus.”
“This is a great class for those who are trying Pilates for the first time and those with some experience. Barbara is a very encouraging teacher who takes account of each class member’s abilities. It is a friendly class and in a good location for those working in the City and the West End”
“I really enjoy Barbara’s Pilates classes, she is a good teacher and puts a lot of thought into the sessions, each week is slightly different with a variety of equipment used (bands, balls, loops) to challenge the body to work, we always cover the core positions that are key to getting stronger. It’s a great start to my week!”
“My wife and I recently took some private Pilates lessons with Barbara (BKH Pilates). We had taken group lessons elsewhere so are not new to the Pilates concept. However, the individual attention we received from Barbara was wonderful. She tailored our sessions to fit our requirements and abilities and her focus on ensuring that our form, etc was correct during our sessions was very helpful. Barbara was extremely professional and is very knowledgeable in Pilates and patient. She’s a fun teacher and we highly recommend her if you are looking for a safe, effective and enjoyable Pilates workout, whatever your skill level. Highly Recommend!”
“I have been attending Barbara’s Pilates classes for nearly a year and I can honestly say that I am really enjoying being taught Pilates by Barbara who is a very experienced Pilates teacher whilst also very patient and calm. Barbara has equally been able to support me with past injuries with her knowledge and wealth of experience. The classes are gentle and are focused on all the different areas of the body without being too over strenuous. I will most certainly continue to attend Barbara’s classes as it has now become part of my weekly routine and a feel good factor”
