Whilst Pilates has gained in popularity within the fitness arena, it was originally developed as a form of exercise for rehabilitation in the early 20th Century.
Today, Pilates is widely accepted by medical professionals as an effective way to manage injury recovery, prevention and a range of medical conditions, including low back pain and osteoporosis.
At BKH Pilates, we offer specialist advice and support with our Pilates for Rehabilitation sessions, including receiving referrals and partnering with physiotherapists to ensure you have the most appropriate treatment possible.
Pilates for Low Back Pain
More than 80% of the adult population suffer from low back pain at some time in their life and there is increasing evidence that physical activity and exercise can, in the majority of cases, help manage the condition.
Pilates is good way of exercising for many people with back pain as it provides a balanced workout focusing on strengthening the core abdominal muscles which provide support to the back. A study published in Clinical Rehabilitation (2015) concluded that the Pilates method was effective in reducing pain, improving function and quality of life in patients with chronic, non specific low back pain.
At BKH Pilates, we have undertaken specialist Back4Good Pilates training to help people with low back pain and our teaching is tailored to our client’s needs where exercises are modified and adapted accordingly. We are also registered with Backcare, the charity for healthier backs.
Pilates for surgery recovery
Developing strength in your back, core and hips give your body the alignment it needs while creating a natural sense of balance. Pilates allows you to explore and focus on specific weaknesses by retraining imbalanced muscles that may have contributed to your injury.
